Event Description

What a difference a great board can make in leading and supporting the work of an organization. But building a great board can feel like magical realism sometimes. Sustaining a board can be an overwhelming task for the executive director.

How can your organization create a strong board, support its leadership and define the appropriate roles for everyone involved? These are critical questions we'll address in this session.

Discussion Topics

  • How to build and support your board
  • Creating a board structure that empowers and inspires
  • Board and staff roles - be clear and have agreement

Creating a strong board doesn't happen overnight. It is built through a unique, intentional process - one that you influence directly. The result of this guided process is a board structure that establishes clear lines of authority, and supports both board and staff efforts to move great ideas forward.

Explore strategies for creating board and committee structures that increase board effectiveness and keep busy board members engaged. Help board members understand what their job is (and what their job isn't), so they are empowered to participate in a meaningful way.

Marc Smiley is one of Oregon's most dynamic, experienced, and entertaining board consultants. He has been an executive director, board member, and board chair, and has worked with hundreds of boards to mobilize energy and increase productivity. You'll take away new ideas and enthusiasm for creating the board your nonprofit needs!
