IRS Releases New Form 990 Filing Instructions for 2008
On August 19, 2008, the Internal Revenue Service released new instructions for nonprofit organizations regarding filing Form 990 for the 2008 tax year (e.g., forms that will be filed in 2009). In a substantive press release the IRS provided a series of helpful links that detail the history of revisions to Form 990, the public comment period that led to the newly revised instructions, and information to help nonprofits assess their next steps--including a helpful chart to determine whether to file a 990 or 990-EZ.
NAO recommends that nonprofits become familiar with the new forms and instructions now to avoid confusion and missed deadlines in 2009. TACS' Nonprofit Fiscal Managers Association (NFMA) will offer a network training session on the new forms in March 2009.
