Event Description

Being “global souls” — seeing ourselves as members of a local and global community\, knowing that we share the future with others — requires powerful forms of intercultural competence.

Recent research has suggested that the key variable in developing intercultural competence is curiosity about cultural differences. Americans have a saying that “curiosity killed the cat.” Perhaps\, in intercultural interactions\, a lack of curiosity is more of a problem\, though.

As professionals\, we are frequently asked to foster competent interaction across cultures\, perhaps to think as “global souls.” This discussion will explore the centrality of intercultural competence and curiosity in our work\, suggesting both the benefits and risks.

We will explore the following questions\:

What exactly is intercultural competence?

How can we be respectfully curious?

What actions can we take to enhance curiosity and competence?

Janet Bennett\, Ph.D. is Executive Director of the Intercultural Communication Institute\, sponsor of the Summer Institute for Intercultural Communication\, and Director of the Master of Arts Degree in Intercultural Relations jointly offered by ICI and the University of the Pacific. She specializes in developing intercultural competence programs\, both domestically and internationally. As a consultant\, she works with colleges and universities\, corporations\, legal organizations\, social service agencies\, international relief NGOs\, and professional associations. She teaches in the training and development program at Portland State University\, and publishes on intercultural training intercultural competence\, and adjustment.

Learn how to\:

Manage targeted and heartfelt messaging

Explore the how/what/when/where of an effective mission-driven narrative

Analyze successful nonprofits and how they tell their story

Develop a comprehensive plan to tell your own story consistently and effectively

Every nonprofit has a unique story\, but successful nonprofits effectively weave their story through all they do. Whether in newsletters\, websites\, special events or simply in management style\, the keys to success in outreach\, awareness and fundraising come via effective storytelling. Communicating your own story must be strategic yet simple\, concise yet adaptable\, but most of all\, must come from the heart.

This session will help you find practical and real solutions to more effectively tell your story. We will look at other nonprofit successes\, as well as a simple way to assess your organization’s own storytelling capabilities with tangible and practical solutions.

Event Description

Selecting an executive director is a key role of a nonprofit board of directors\, but it doesn't stop there! Regular evaluation of the executive director can not only ensure that an organization's mission is being met and that the person at the center of the organization feels supported\, but can also provide an opportunity to clarify expectations about the need for strategic decision making – especially important in challenging economic times.

Last month\, we talked about hiring an ED. In this session\, we'll answer your questions about evaluating the ED\, including\:

How do I evaluate someone who may know more about our organization than me?

When and how often should we evaluate?

How do you find a balance between micromanagement and no management?

How can the evaluation process be a true partnership?

Four key functions of supervision

Getting and giving useful feedback

Strategies to get good people to stay

Dealing with staff performance difficulties

Recognizing the impact of cultural/style differences in supervision

Organizational systems to support supervision

Employees are your organization’s greatest resource\, but if they are not being effectively supported and directed\, you may not be receiving their maximum contribution to your organization’s mission and goals. Cliff Jones\, TACS Senior Associate\, offers a holistic approach to supervision. He has helped hundreds of supervisors in nonprofits develop skills and supervision methods that really make a difference.

In Effective Supervision you will explore the most essential elements of a supervisor’s role\, including setting goals\, giving and receiving feedback\, addressing challenges\, providing support\, and creating development opportunities that promote individual and professional growth. Cliff will address the specific challenges of supervision in the nonprofit environment\, highlight participants’ real experiences in supervising staff\, and help you identify concrete goals and changes that you can implement with individual staff and teams. You’ll gain strategies to address unclear expectations between staff and supervisor\, ambivalence about authority\, low pay\, and heavy workloads.

Whether you have the title of supervisor or not\, this workshop will help you develop the techniques to build staff ownership\, encourage joint problem solving\, and help staff experience success and satisfaction in working together. Effective Supervision focuses on practical application to build upon the supervision skills you’ve already developed or are beginning to develop\, and learning new approaches to make a difference in your organization.

Not all liability policies are the same. Is your organization protected from claims? Do you know what your policies say? Directors’ and Officers’ policies are “manuscript policies”\, and coverages and clauses in these policies are negotiable. Find out what you need to know about your policies\, and what you can and should be negotiating for.

We’ll explore these questions\:

Directors’ and Officers’ Liability – what do your contracts say?

Employment Practices Liability – cost vs. coverage?

Who is a fiduciary\, and why is Fiduciary Liability important?

How can losses be prevented?

Join Dennis Doherty for a look at these liability policies and related case studies. We’ll discuss how employee retirement plans impose important responsibilities on your organization’s leaders\, and what you can do to protect them. Don’t miss this NFMA session where you’ll get the information you need to avoid surprises and better protect your organization’s assets!

Dennis Doherty has been the Nonprofit Practice Leader for Beecher Carlson (formerly JBL&amp\;K) for over 20 years. As a local and national presenter\, his specialties include nonprofit risk management and strategic planning for clients. Dennis brings a unique understanding to risk management as a board member of several local nonprofit organizations.
